History of The Woodlands, Texas
In 1974, George P. Mitchell founded The Woodlands, Texas, using ecological planning concepts and design consultants employed in other well-regarded, new communities of that era, such as Columbia, Maryland and Irvine Ranch, California. His desire was to develop a community that preserved the natural beauty of the forests, while at the same time, maintained urban conveniences.
The Woodlands is an extraordinary community because of the detailed, future-conscious plan of the original development, an innovative plan that incorporated many of the latest environmental design principals. Named one of the best master-planned communities in the country, The Woodlands has also won the Award of Excellence in Special Development from the Urban Land Institute.
Parks and Wooded Preserves of The Woodlands
The Woodlands boasts a total of 28,000 wooded acres. After 33 years of growth, The Woodlands remains true to its name with more than 5,000 acres preserved as Green Space, and a plan for 8,000 to remain “Green” once the community is completed.
There are currently 108 forested parks and 155 miles of hike and bike trails. One journalist stated that The Woodlands is “the invisible city” because trees are the overwhelming presence along major roadways, in neighborhoods, and even in commercial areas. Shopping areas, neighborhoods, restaurants, are all set back into the woods, blending in to the natural landscape.
Villages and Golf Courses in The Woodlands
There are six distinct villages in The Woodlands. Each village offers a unique variety of parks, recreation, shopping, restaurants and much more. The Woodlands is the only community in the nation to have six world-class golf courses!
Grogan's Mill
The first village constructed, Grogan's Mill, is essentially the heart of The Woodlands, and is located at the center of the original development. Shopping, dining, recreation, easy access to employment in any part of The Woodlands, and to major road systems of I-45 and 242, makes Grogan's Mill an ideal location to live. Included are two golf courses, The Woodlands Oaks and The Woodlands East Course, part of The Woodlands Country Club.
The Village of Panther Creek
The second village construction in The Woodlands is The Village of Panther Creek. Due to its central location and abundance of parks and recreational centers, The Village of Panther Creek is one of the most sought after places to live in The Woodlands. With easy access to Town Center and I-45, the eastern edge borders Lake Woodlands, and along the shores of Lake Woodlands are two of the most scenic parks in The Woodlands - Northshore Park and Southshore Park. Any level of golfer will be challenged by The Woodlands Panther Trail Golf Course.
Grogan's Forest
Grogan’s Forest is located at the end of Grogan’s Mill Road, where Shenandoah meets The Woodlands. The Village of Alden Bridge
The Village of Alden Bridge is one of the largest sections of The Woodlands, Texas. This sprawling, heavily forested area features two major shopping centers – Alden Bridge Village Center and Windvale Village Center – and large community pools, a water park, and many jogging and nature trails.
Carlton Woods is considered one of the premier address’ in Texas. This exclusive gated community offers the private Jack Nicklaus Golf Course and The Club at Carlton Woods. The styles include French Villa’s, Mediterranean, Old World, Italian and Patio Homes.
The Village of Sterling Ridge
The Village of Sterling Ridge features The Woodlands County Club and The Gary Player Signature Golf Course. Recently completed, the newest YMCA in The Woodlands can be found in Sterling Ridge. Easy access to 2978, close proximity to Wal-Mart, the Terramont Shopping Center and the Sterling Ridge Shopping Center, makes this an attractive place for homeowners seeking the tranquility of nature with all the modern conveniences. Plans are in the works for a new 400 acre neighborhood, which will be called Spindle Tree. Prices start in the $190’s and should be available for purchase beginning in 2008. There will be over 900 home sites for single family homes and town homes, two parks, and hiking and bike trails.
East Shore
East Shore is a 260 acre neighborhood on the eastern edge of Lake Woodlands, and is considered to be the “Garden District” of The Woodlands Town Center. Offering urban living with old architectural style and modern conveniences, this village is within walking distance to shopping at Market Street, plus dining and entertainment along The Woodlands Waterway. Everyone will enjoy strolling along the tree-lined streets where ornamental streetlamps give off a soft glow, enhancing the lake views and peaceful garden spaces.
Many styles of architecture can be found in East Shore, from Classic and Coastal American, to the more traditional Colonial American. Large front porches grace the front of Brownstones, Town Homes and Condominiums. The ambiance of East Shore feels like the urban villages in New York, Chicago and San Francisco.
Cochran's Crossing
Cochran’s Crossing is named after the original Grogan-Cochran Lumber Company. One of the largest villages in the middle of The Woodlands, Cochran's Crossing is home to The Woodlands Country Club, The Palmer Golf Course, YMCA, and Bear Branch Sports Field. Homeowners will have access to exemplary schools, several large parks and shopping at Cochran’s Crossing Shopping Center.
North of The Woodlands, is a neighborhood called Harper’s Landing. Located here are Montgomery College and St Luke’s Community Medical Center. Also, two active adult communities, Windsor Hills and Windsor Lakes are developments that completely cater to those over the age of 55. A variety of shops are available at the College Park Plaza.
The Village of Indian Springs
The Village of Indian Springs is known for its rolling topography, abundant trees, and overall peaceful setting. As one of the smallest villages located on the south side of The Woodlands, there are many big advantages such as the John Cooper School, a private college preparatory academy for grades K-12, and Indian Springs Village Center. This center is one of the most popular shopping centers, containing an H-E-B supermarket and the ever-popular Mi Luna, a restaurant with delicious food and after hours dancing.
Creekside
In the newest section of The Woodlands is the Creekside development. This master planned community accommodates all types of lifestyles, from retirees and empty nesters, to families, singles and executives. There will be 5,516 single-family homes, 541 age 55 and over homes, 738 multi-family residences, and 298 custom and estate homes in the gated community of Carlton Woods Creekside.
In 2006, The Fazio Championship Golf Course opened, and immediately "Golf Digest" named it “The Best New Private Course in Texas,” and “The #3, Best New Private Course in the U.S.” A 20 acre preserve, Rob Flemming Park, encompasses 79 acres of lakes and ponds, and the 1,700 acre Cynthia Mitchell Nature Preserve provides an ideal, natural backdrop for those who wish to escape from their busy everyday lives. A 17 acre Aquatic Center is scheduled to open in 2008.
